Closing Up the House for Flooding

1. Shut the main breaker off.  In most breaker panels, it will be the top breaker switch in the middle.

2. Shut the water off, if possible.  This will keep contaminated water from backing up into the public water supply.

3. Shut the gas off at the meter.  Don’t risk a gas leak that could lead to the house catching fire that will affect your neighbors and further burden first responders.

4. Take important papers. You don’t know when you will be back to the house so take important papers you have in safe keeping, such as birth certificates, with you.
